I have a coworker with an American Bulldog, and her dog's floppy ears have also had several infections. But all floppy eared dogs can't possibly have constant ear infections, everybody would know about that.Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10562151546770315227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-938120942169485220.post-69043712818010979622014-01-11T10:03:15.159-05:002014-01-11T10:03:15.159-05:00Maggie's ears stick out to the side, while Duk...Maggie's ears stick out to the side, while Duke's ears flop down. She has much dirtier ears, while Duke's are usually very clean. We've noticed the same thing with my parents' current dog, whose ears are cropped, compared to previous dogs with natural ears. It seems like more dirt can get into cropped ears, while the floppy ears cover the ear canal.

I've also heard the opposite, that dogs with floppy ears are more prone to ear infection due to the lack of airflow. Not sure if any of this has been scientifically verified! :) 2 Punk Dogshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06373806920604586043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-938120942169485220.post-19556706277705029182014-01-10T23:24:14.328-05:002014-01-10T23:24:14.328-05:00Circumcision is another one of those things that&#...Circumcision is another one of those things that's elective, theoretically preventative (or it's what people used to think, anyway?) and FAR worse to go through as an adult. It comes up in cropping/docking discussions I've seen.

I can see what you mean about speutering; there's a lot of contradictory advice. On one hand, I've read evidence that spaying before a first heat reduces the chances of certain cancers, and obviously reduces uterine/ovarian cancer. On the other hand, I've read evidence that speutering can severely affect longevity (I think that study was done on Golden Retrievers? Of course I remember no specific sources to cite).Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10562151546770315227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-938120942169485220.post-26821478790088437692014-01-10T23:20:19.009-05:002014-01-10T23:20:19.009-05:00It was kind of interesting that the Dogster articl...It was kind of interesting that the Dogster article didn't cover Dewclaws, but I forgot to mention it. And really, I don't know enough about dewclaws just now to hold forth on the topic. I know that in Dobermans, or for most of them, the dewclaw is nice and tight to the leg (if that's the right terminology?) as opposed to some dogs/breeds, where it is much looser and more likely to get hung up on things.

Shame that you got ugly comments, though. That's really uncalled for, I feel. I mean, there are topics I'll get impassioned about, certainly, but I try not to get ridiculously insulting.Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10562151546770315227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-938120942169485220.post-14008182001605357832014-01-10T23:18:37.702-05:002014-01-10T23:18:37.702-05:00Docking is one of those topics that don't real...Docking is one of those topics that don't really come up on its own, necessarily. I am *deeply* ambivalent about all elective surgeries on dogs, including spay/neuter of dogs who are owned by responsible humans.

That said, nobody's outlawed circumcision of human babies yet. I got a lot of really ugly comments and insults. I had to close comments.
