This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things....

We frequently have a hard time keeping toys on hand in this house. Elka loves toys, and as I've said before, Elka's love is not a gentle one.

Amusingly, squeaky toys used to actually have some level of protection from her. The squeak made her hesitate, jump back, regroup. That seems to have gone away in its entirety, though, and the squeaking only encourages her.

There is a certain dance that occurs when Elka is playing with a toy by herself. She tosses it around, spins, stomps on it.

There's also the "pause and chew" phase, where her butt is in the air, the object is held firmly in her paws, and she gets it between those molars and just grinds it apart.

This chicken, the one that distracted her so when we were doing the Taste of the Wild prize drawing, did not live very long after that.

Yeah, that's right. She chewed its face off.

  1. Ah, the execution dance. Something I find hilarious, mainly because Winston is about as threatening and feather pillow.
My thoughts are with the chicken and its family.

    1. Depending, the squeak kind of drives me crazy, which is why she originally didn't have any. Now that she's discovered the joys of them, though, I'm on the lookout for ones that last longer that five minutes (not unlike all those tennis balls.....)

  4. Elka is a hard-lovin' girl. I know she has fun though.

    1. Fun is Elka's main goal, I'd say. Fun and food!

  5. LOL! Poor faceless chicken. We can't keep toys here for long either between Toby The Power Chewer and Meadow The Shredder.

    1. Most toys that require supervision live on top of the fridge after a short time, so that they can come out in judicious doses and last a little bit!

  6. My little guys go directly after the squeaker. When that is gone, the toy is boring.

    1. She has done some of that surgical squeaker removal that you hear about! With the chicken, though, the whole body was the vehicle for it to squeak. The very first one, she chewed a toe open and it stopped squeaking; I guess it was before she thought to chew the face off?

  8. Sometimes, Elka loves a toy so much, she has to hurt it. ;)

    1. It's true! Toys she doesn't love, she leaves entirely intact, disdainfully.

  12. Hahahahaha! I laugh because I think we say that same thing at least once a week. Ah well. It's just a toy, right? They are meant to be played with, even if it means certain death.

    1. I have that expectation, that all dog toys will meet their grisly end. My fiance feels bad about them, though.

  13. I love it!! I always say, I'd prefer they destroy a toy as opposed to shoes, furniture or rugs!

    1. Poor chicken indeed.

The kicker? We had another chicken just like it, and she immediately went for the face and did the same thing.
