Dog Treats From the Grocery Store

There are times Elka is picky about the treats handed to her.

Oh, she'll always take them, but whether she eats them is something else. The last time we were in Tractor Supply, she very nicely took the Milkbone from the cashier, and then set it down on the plastic bag loader (not even on the floor!) and looked at the lady, as if to say "All right, what else do you have?"

So, as a followup to my recent post about having found decent food in my grocery store, I also found decent treats. Just a few ingredients. They are, however, little crunchy bone shaped biscuits.

It does combine two things that Elka very much likes indeed: peanut butter, and yogurt (well, one of them is yogurt "frosted", anyway. The other two are just peanut butter). The single creepy ingredient in these is "artificial color", for the coating. I imagine it's to make sure it stays white.

At $1.99 for three of them, this won't be a regular purchase for Elka. They are big enough that I can break them up, but I gave her the yogurt one whole, for the fun of it. And some pictures, of course.

While the coating appealed to her, she seemed at a loss, at first, as to what she should do with it. I got a picture right as she put it on the floor and pawed it.

Maybe it was a toy? It smelled peanut buttery, though.

Mostly, peanut buttery things are to be eaten. Or coveted, because the humans are eating them.

And we have a verdict. It is not a toy, but rather a treat. I'm so glad that Elka figured it out...I keep trying to say how smart she is!

  3. Jeffie is suspicious of any new treat. Lots of sniffing, then he may - or may not - take the treat. Rudy trusts us... if we're offering, then it must be something good. lol Looks to me like Elka would enjoy some more taste testing photo sessions ;-)

  4. Ha! It's nice that Elka has such discerning tastes! Blueberry used to be that way, but now even if I am holding a clump of her fur from a combing, she'll try to eat that. Glad you found a treat for Elka she likes!

  5. I had an Akita mix that was pretty blase about treats. He'd sniff them and maybe take them, if the person offering was a friend. Most of the time, the treats would end up ignored. The only thing he really seemed to enjoy were crunchy chicken rice balls but those were a little pricey for my budget so he didn't get them often.

  6. I'll have to look for these. My dogs share my love of peanut butter. They even eat broccoli if i smear it with peanut butter.

  7. Silas used to be a pro at taking a treat from someone, then spitting it back out. These days I am lightening fast at "Food allergies! Can't have that!" (followed by a less curt explanation once the treat has been put away.)

  10. Kuster is very picky about what he will eat, too, which surprises me. He's very food motivated, but if he doesn't know what it is, it undergoes a thorough investigation first. It cracks me up! I'm glad you found something that Elka likes that's not too risky, though!
