Name Your Own Price Pet Adoptions

October is "Name Your Own Price Pet Adoptions" month at the Broome County Humane Society.

From their web site:

You can’t put a price on love.  Or can you?  This October, you are invited to name your own price on all cat and dog adoptions, all month long.  It is the ultimate “re-tail” event, to encourage adopters and find new homes for dozens of loveable pets.
Simply pick out your favorite dog or cat, determine that furry face’s value, and make an offer.  In addition to special adoption rates, we will also be giving away a $10 gift card to Hoffman’s Car Wash with all approved adoption applications.
The Name-Your-Own-Price Adopt-a-thon will kick off this weekend with two adoption events.
Friday, September 28th we will be at PetSmart on the Vestal Parkway from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM and Saturday, September 29th we will be at Hoffman’s Car Wash from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
How many homeless pets do you know?  We know 150!
We currently have over 50 dogs and 90 cats in our shelter all looking for a good home.  Stop in to find a new “best friend.”  Normal adoption fees range from $65 to $187.  Standard adoption criteria apply.  Offer excludes puppies & kittens (under 6 months old).

What an interesting thing for a shelter to have! I'd never heard of such a strategy before, have you? You know what the best news is, that I've noticed on the Broome County Humane Society web site? Storm isn't on there any more! I'll take that as the best sign, that the very last of the Conklin Dobermans was adopted! I couldn't be more happy for him,

We've had a couple of visits here from owners who have adopted some of the Dobermans from the Broome County Humane Society, which is totally awesome. Who knows, maybe we'll here from Storm's new family!

Conklin NY Doberman Update: Sasha has gone home, Houston might be next!

So, I emailed the Broome County Humane Society because really, if I'm posting about dogs in their care, they might want to add some insight!

The animal profiles on each page had been updated, which I hadn't noticed, so there is more information there already to glean about each dog.

I was also informed that Sasha has gone to her home (yay!) and that they hope to send Houston home this weekend (double yay!)

Handsome Houston. Fingers crossed that his adoption goes well! This boy is 10, a sweetie, and doesn't really bark a whole lot. Definite bonus! It suggests (to me) that he's still pretty confident despite what he went through.

Still 5 of the Conklin Dobermans available at the Broome County Humane Society

I was looking today at the Broome County Humane Society for the Dobermans, because how could I not? It looks like many of the younger ones (Bella was 4) have been adopted already! That's good news for them!

The five who are left are all 8 and 10, however. Some may not be housebroken. I don't know of a whole lot of people who go to the shelter with those criteria in mind. I also wonder at the ages that are listed, which are either 8 years and 1 month, or 10 years and 1 month. Either they were littermates, or the Humane Society is guessing, is my guess. I really don't know.

Houston is a big handsome lug. He's one of the 10 year olds, and though there is grey in his muzzle, he isn't as grizzled as some older dogs that I've seen. He looks like he still has some pep to him!

Nani is also 10, and has a sweet smile.

Haley is 8, and an albino. Her ears are natural, and she has a great expression on her face in the picture below. In all the pictures of her, really.

Storm is also an 8 year old albino, and still looks pretty skinny. Depending on his preferences, I'm sure he'd love to sit down and share a hot dog or two with somebody. Maybe make it a date!

Sasha is a pretty 8 year old red girl. It's interesting to me that the reds and the albinos are the dogs who are left; even Blue Bella went home quickly, practically as soon as I had posted the first time.

Of course, just by looking at their pictures, I don't actually know anything about them. The less time they have to spend in the shelter environment the better, though. It can be psychologically damaging to dogs, and really, these guys just came from living in crated quarters. They shouldn't live out their senior years in shelter cages. Spread the word!

Conklin Dobermans Now Available for Adoption

On July 5, I posted about 13 Dobermans being removed from a home. The "owner" signed them immediately over to the Broome County Humane Society, which is good. She's also apparently lodged a Not Guilty  plea in court, which is sad and laughable, but I guess that's the way it goes. At least the dogs are safe.....or at least most of them. My understanding is that one of them did not survive.

However, the healthiest of them have apparently been deemed good to go for adoption! They are listed on the Broome County Humane Society web page. When you click "Adoptions", you'll see "All Available Animals", including, when you scroll down, some of the Dobermans. They only have 8 listed as of the moment I'm writing this, and only 3 have pictures, but the sooner these dogs can get into experienced Doberman homes, the sooner they can get on with happy lives, cared for by people who love them. And will, one would think, do things like feed them.

I would be happier with their listings if they had more information about the actual dogs, but my understanding is that the Humane Society is more or less at capacity, and they do what they can. It would be good to know if any sort of temperament testing has been tried, however. The only concrete info they've listed is ages of the dogs, and that they are spayed or neutered. There has been a bit of contention because the Broome County Humane Society did not release these dogs to Doberman rescue, but it's my understanding that they did have some level of communication with the Doberman Assistance Network and the Doberman Pinscher Club of America. I do hope these things are true, and not rumor.
