Phoenix in Southern Doberman Rescue really needs help (warning, one graphic image at the end of the post)

Southern Doberman Rescue is a 501(c)3 pending organization in Alambama that is working to help Dobermans in the Southeast United States.

Recently, they took in a dog from Alabama who had been dumped in the overnight animal control pen. They don't know how old she is, or how long she's been ill, or even the extent of what's wrong with her. But Phoenix has a horrible case of Demdex mange. Horrible. Remember Manny back in January (if you click that, please be advised the pictures are bad)? She's worse than Manny. Much, much worse.

Southern Doberman Rescue currently has Phoenix at their vet where she can be monitored and treated. In addition to the mange, she has a fungal infection, may or may not have cataracts, and her hearing might be affected. Her feet are dreadfully swollen. She is heartworm negative, so that's one thing gone right for this poor girl. The condition she's in would have had to take months to reach, which makes me sick. I don't know how somebody can allow a dog in their care to get in such a state, and then dump them overnight. Phoenix and SDR could really use any donations you could make in order to help out.

Also, please share her link with her story: Phoenix is in SDR. Getting this info out can hopefully get the rescue and this dog's story the exposure and help they need.

I put a picture of Phoenix behind the cut. Warning, it is a graphic image. she is a picture of neglect, and I debated whether I should include a picture. But this is what can happen, folks. I do apologize if I upset anybody.

When is a breeder a puppy mill?

Too frequently in dog news, there are stories that hurt my heart.

Not everybody feels the same way about dogs. I get that. Not every breeder feels the same way about their dogs, and I get that too. But there should be an accepted baseline, you know?

There are the sorts kinds of things that bring the AKC under fire, as the New York Times reported last week. The AKC evidently has a total of 9 people for the entire country, to carry out inspections of this sort. And that's only if somebody calls them in, I daresay. The AKC is a breed registry, and a pedigree database. That's really it. They claim to be an animal welfare agency, and I know that they are a registered not for profit, but what is the point at which welfare is called into question? How many puppies makes a puppy mill? How much poop needs to pile up before conditions are  considered bad enough? How many cages, stacked or otherwise?

Rescued GA Doberman update (DAN still needs donations) (some pictures still graphic)

Last week I posted about Manny, a Doberdude in Georgia who had been found dumped, with a severe case of demodetic mange.

Well, I've been checking up on the Doberman Assistance Network's Facebook, to see about his progress. He apparently had to receive a breathing treatment back on the 13, but that could be a complication of all the swelling from his mange. Also, it turns out he's well enough to be in a foster home now (I think the same person who had the suspected parvo puppies, but I could be wrong), and he seems to be both feeling better and settling in nicely.

If you feel you can help Manny, renamed Blaise, please consider donating to the Doberman Assistance Network. Blaise is only one of the dogs that they're currently helping; there are too many that need it.

also, good news! An anonymous donor has agreed to match $600 dollars, if such an amount is donated to Blaise through either Paypal or mail (remember to put "For Blaise" in the special instructions portion!)

Or checks can be mailed to:
Doberman Assistance Network, Inc.
c/o Heidi Merriman
3852 La Colina Road
El Sobrante, CA 94803

Please be sure to mark on the check that the donation is for Blaise.

13 Emaciated Dobermans Removed from Home

I have "Doberman" on Google Alert, as one might expect.

Well, this afternoon, I got this article: Conklin Woman Faces 16 Cruelty Charges

To give the horrible rundown, 13 emaciated Dobermans were removed from this woman's home. All but 4 were in crates that were inches deep with excrement. There was no food or water for them. And she claimed to be a Doberman rescue.

There were more crates to be found elsewhere in the house, but those dogs weren't alive. Some of them weren't even identifiable by species.

The dogs were signed over to the Broome County Humane Society, in Binghamton, NY (which is my backyard, by the by). From the above article:

Those interested in donating items or money can stop by the Humane Society at 2 Jackson St. in Binghamton, or call 724-3709. A list of needed items are available at http://bchumanesoc.com/.

This makes me feel literally ill. If you have the ability to help, it would definitely be appreciated. I hope that this woman may never own animals again (they removed three hamsters and a rabbit as well). I hope that all thirteen dogs pull through.
