Do I smell....banana?

We spent last week in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The drive down is 12-13 hours for us, depending on traffic and stops. Elka is very good in the car, and doesn't even puke anymore, now that we give her Dramamine (per the vet's recommendation and instructions).

On our drive down, the car was a bit more crowded than on the way back. We had more snacks packed, more booze, y'know, things like that. At one point (probably about....hour 11), my fiancé goes "Why do I smell banana?"

(car was stationary when all pictures got snapped)

My answer was, of course, "Well, we brought bananas....."

Our friend, sitting in the back with Elka, said "No, I wasn't doing my job" in a desultory tone. It would seem that Elka, very carefully (her tags didn't even rattle!), stuck her head into the snack bag, opened the bottom of a banana peel (it wasn't chewed, it was opened), and (carefully!) at half of a banana.

Our friend was very apologetic. I thought it was very funny, really. Nothing was in the bag that could hurt her, and we do give her bananas. She just felt like she had to sneak this one! Of course, she was also totally sitting like a lady in the car.

Of course, after reaching our destination, she was given the rest.

Elka quite enjoyed the vacation: bananas, and we were in a house full of our friends!

    1. I wish we were still there, really! I'm a beach person at heart.

My best bits of advice: The Atlantic Cafe (now in Salvo/Waves/Rodanthe [was at the Avon pier] is amazing, The Empty Nest Jewelry store down in Frisco (it's the right after the Gingerbread House, if you're heading south) is beautiful, and on Ocracoke, Live Oak Coffee has freaking rosemary syrup that they make to put in stuff and it's also good.

I hope you enjoy! Where do you stay? We like Avon, but the family has tried out Hatteras and Rodanthe.

  3. Sneaky! So funny that she was so careful. She doesn't seem like a sneak stealer in the rest of your life.

Silas hates banana. I can't blame him.

    1. She really isn't a sneak, so it was extra funny (and obviously the poor thing was hungry, I cut her off from food the evening before)

    1. Some dogs don't like banana. Elka likes all kinds of odd fruits and vegetables that surprise people (potatoes, green beans, green pepper, apple, banana....)

  5. Sneaked food always seems to taste better than the stuff people just give to dogs.

    1. I think that might be true!

This is also, I think, only the second time she's sneaked anything. Maybe third?

Really, sneaked food tastes better to people when other people don't know you have it as well!

  11. Although most humans open their bananas from the stem, Elka did it the right way. She is a very smart girl.

  12. I agree with SlimDoggy... she absolutely deserved that banana! A 12-13 hour car ride? I can't imagine! An hour car ride is stressful around here. For 12-13 hours, the wieners would be demanding some kind of medal. Especially if they had to sit all harnessed in.
Good job Elka! If you can sneak open a banana without tearing it, you can sneak anything!
