dogIDs bison leather collar and leash: product review

I was approached by dogIDs.com to do a product review, and after having a look at their offerings, I just had to say yes! I selected a deep red bison leather collar, which was personalized with an engraved nameplate, and a matching deep red bison leather leash. I told Elka what I'd done (she listened, anyway) and we eagerly awaited the delivery.

Right out of the package, my first impression is how swanky the leather feels. The deep red leather is bison, while the inner gold leather is elk. Both are, at risk of sounding a little weird, a fabulous sensory experience. Have you ever been in a leather store and unable to stop touching the jackets? That's kind of how this collar and leash are. The color is good, and in addition to looking and feeling nice, the collar and leash are clearly tough as well. When you have a 75 pound dog and are obsessed with safety, these are good things. The leather is North Dakota bison and North American elk hide, so this purchase would be supporting USA sourced, USA made products. I'm a fan of that!

The timing for the review opportunity was great, actually, as it was right before our trip to Cape Hatteras. For the car ride (across five states!) I just added Elka's personalized dogIDs collar to her usual collar + tags + harness assortment, reasoning that they couldn't possibly all fail at once. (A bit much? It might've been a bit much. It's okay; Elka does not appear to know that I dress her funny.)

The brass name plate (which I'm not picturing, apologies; I'd prefer not to have my phone number just out there on the Interweb) has Elka's name on it, my cell number, and my fiancè's cell number. I picked the Bodini font, for it's clear simplicity. You get 3 lines, 15 characters (including spaces) per line. The hardware on the collar and leash is brass (solid and non-corrosive, according to the dogIDs.com product description), and very attractive.

In the interest of full disclosure, I did accidentally order the collar a tad too large, but it's still in no danger of coming off over her head. That's my mistake, no fault of dogIDs, who sent me very clear instructions on determining appropriate sizing. The collar and leash are both, per the product description, "fully stitched with nylon thread for additional strength and to prevent stretching", which is I think a nice detail, both for quality and aesthetic reasons.

I'm very happy with both products dogIDs sent us, and would certainly recommend them. If and when we add another dog to the household, once we pick that dog's color (Elka's is red, obviously), I'm likely to get a matching set! Every dog should have some swanky collar and leash action.

FTC disclosure: dogIDs.com sent me the personalized engraved collar and matching leash for review, but did not otherwise compensate me for this post.

  2. It looks good on Elka! I agree I like it to touch leather too and I like the smell of good leather. ( I know that's not really peta-conform - but I'm just honest) Can you replace the snap hook in case of damage?

    1. oooh yeah, the smell of good leather too.

I don't know about replacing the snap hook. Were it to become damaged, I'd certainly contact dogIDs and see what they could or could not do for me! Otherwise, I do know a couple of leatherworkers.

    2. We haven't had any issues in the past with the snap on the leash being damaged, but if you had any issues with our collar or leash, our customer service team is ready to help!

Thanks for your comment and question.

  4. Very Cool!!! Red is my favorite color (or the color Ma likes on me...she says it goes great with the black and tan!!! BOL)
It's too bad that they don't have longer leashes. Ma likes to create her own 'flexi-lead' by wrapping the leash around her hand(s), and unfurling as needed.
    The prices seem reasonable too.

  5. I love collars and I really love having matching leashes too. :-) That looks like a beautifully, well made pair. I like the idea of the additional tag on the collar. If something terrible happened and my dog was running free, it would be extra insurance that she would be returned when found. Dangling tags can fall off. :-(

  8. Thank you for a thorough review - with your gorgeous model :). I peruse DogIDs on occasion - this I'll look at more carefully; could be Justus's next present!
Currently, I have Boomerang Collar Tags on all my dogs, personal and adoptable. Love that they are on the collar cause most dangle ones get lost in the yards during play.

    1. I've heard good things about the Boomerang Collar Tags. I think that the dogIDs ones would work out well for your purposes as well! They'd look nice on Justus as well ;)
