Product Review: NutriSource Soft & Tender Lamb Dog Treats

Chewy.com offered us the opportunity to try Nutrisource Soft & Tender Lamb Dog Treats. It's hard to say no to treats! We use them for training and just plain living (Elka is particularly fond of her post-potty treats and her bottle return treats), so it's nice to try a variety of treats with good ingredients, made in the USA!

The treats are somewhat small, but long enough (and soft enough!) to break in half to make them go further, and/or make it seem like you're giving two treats, if you're that kind of sly treat giver (confession: I sometimes am). They smell somewhat of barbecue, which is a little bit disconcerting for the human treat givers, but Elka doesn't seem to mind.

Whenever it's treat review time, Elka gets excited because yeah, new treats! I also get excited, because she's motivated, and we're able to work on things like "Get out of the kitchen" (which means go lay down in the kitchen doorway and stop whining. Essentially). I also try to get all cute for the review pictures, which works sometimes better than others. This time, I was all "I'm totally going to get a treat on the nose picture! These treats are little and cute and bone shaped, it'll be perfect!" Yeah. We haven't really worked on the treat on the nose trick. A little bit, sure. Not enough to take it on the road, though, so here's how that particular brainstorm turned out.

Yeah. So obviously, Elka likes the treats. I think the treats are pretty great, since they're manageable, not messy, and not too smelly. Not smelly enough that your hands are a mess. The ingredients are:
"Lamb, pea flour, barley flour, glycerin, barley, rice, gelatin, oat flour, pea fiber, salmon oil, phosphoric acid, dried brewers yeast, salt, natural smoke flavor, lecithin, refined konjac flour, minerals (zinc propionate, calcium propionate), natural flavor, L-carnitine, ascorbic acid (source of vitamin C), preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid."
which are an interesting read. I had to look up "konjac flour", which I had never in my life heard of. The Konjac, according to the Google and a quick perusal of Wikipedia is the plant root from which shiritaki noodles are made, and that factoid put me on firmer footing. It's a low-carb starch, said to be quite tasty, and used as a thickener. It might very well be why the treats are as soft as they are, but I'm purely speculating.

After the nose shot, I went for one more cute one. I got a cute picture, even if perhaps not the one I was going for. I assure you, no fingers were harmed in the making of this post!

FTC disclosure: The opinions in this article are my own, and I received a bag of NutriSource Soft & Tender Lamb Dog Treats in exchange for this post.

  1. The Chewy.com giveaways are awesome, and great motivator to do more training to test out new treats :) These ones do look really good! I think the barbecue smell would be an improvement over some of the dog treat smells we've had.
