I make macaroni and cheese from scratch every couple of weeks. It's kind of funny that I do; as a kid, I loved boxed mac 'n' cheese, and only from the box. I was frequently picky, so it wouldn't surprise me if I turned my nose up at the from scratch stuff. That, and the box is super cheap. I still like it, but I don't try to call it dinner.
This is Elka, practicing her "leave it".
Good girl Elka! That looks yummy

I was very proud of her! She never got closer than that to the bowl.
DeleteIt was pretty tasty. Not my best batch ever, but still good ^^
I just made mac & cheese from scratch tonight for my son and grandson thinking it would be a special treat. They ate it, but politely told me they prefer the box stuff. My feelings would be hurt, but they have saved me a lot of time and effort for the future.
ReplyDeleteYeah, fewer things are worse than putting in that level of effort and having it be turned away, however politely.
DeleteBack in high school, when the box was one of my staples, I could be stove to table in something like 7 total minutes. I put the pasta in as soon as I put the water on, and once it boiled, it was done. I like it al dente!
I love making a huge batch of homemade mac and cheese, then eating the leftovers for days. I find that the recipe I make is even better the next day, reheated.
ReplyDeleteFrequently, it is better the next day! Everything is even better combined! It's especially true with chili and burritos, but you never think about it for mac 'n' cheese.
DeleteElka looks like she wants to call it dinner. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, she definitely did! I gave her some later (not from that bowl, which wasn't even mine. Just a photo op that I caught, for once)
DeleteI preferred the box stuff when I was a kid too. But I think that's because when my parents made it they put vegetables and onions in it which totally grossed me out. Now that I am an adult and I can bake it with as much cheese as I want, I will choose homemade over the box every time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, why do grownups always put onions in perfectly good dishes? Definitely ruins it for me!
DeleteI'm always surprised by how little cheese some mac 'n' cheese recipes call for....it seems to defeat the purpose.
Kolchak thinks Elka is practically abused for having to "leave it" in that situation!
ReplyDeleteAw, don't worry, Elka gets rewarded in kind!
DeleteNever had the boxed stuff, we don't have it over here!
ReplyDeleteGood leave it though Elka!
Slobbers
No boxed stuff? Well, you really aren't missing much!
DeleteThanks ^^
Good Elka, poor Elka! I sure hope she got a bite later! Lol - I tend to cook more for Kirby than myself. I love Velveeta mac n cheese.
ReplyDeleteVelveeta has that bacon shells and cheese...I confess, I get that for me somtimes!
