Who won Gund's Top Dog?

I'd almost but not quite forgotten about the dates for the Gund Top Dog Contest.  I did not enter Elka, though I did vote for Desmond!

The winner, though, isn't Desmond (sorry buddy). The winner does make me smile, though! He's Johnny Justice, one of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels. I read about the Vick dogs in Jim Gorant's book The Lost Dogs, and am always happy to see positive things about them in the news.

Johnny Justice is a beautiful (handsome, sorry) boy! He now lives in his forever home in California, as discussed ni the Parade article Can You Teach a Bad Dog New Tricks?

  2. That's great. Those dogs are the symbols of how abused fighting dogs can be rehabilitated. The publicity surrounding them has probably saved the lives of a lot of other dogs.

    1. I certainly hope it has, anyway! It also really highlights (I hope it does anyway) the need for responsible and realistic dog ownership.

  4. I am excited the Johnny Justice won, especially with the upsurge in Vick news lately with him wanting to adopt a new dog. For the kids, you know. Blah.

    I will buy one.

    1. Yeah, I cannot support his want for a dog in his life. Especially since the entire time, he's tried to play the "it's unfair to my kids" card, as if it's The Man's fault that he had fighting dogs, and not his own!

    1. Yes, I was happy that those dogs got a second chance. It seems most of them are reasonably successful!

  8. Awwwww, he'll make an amazing stuffy. I would have loved for it to be Desmond, but this pup is fantastic too!

    1. It would have been really cool if it was Desmond. That way we could say we "knew" a famous stuffed dog!

  11. I'm a faithful reader of BADRAP's blogs and FB page and voted for JJ. He's the only dog that I 'knew' in the contest and I'm elated that a pit bull won. I've only met a few pits but they have been lovely dogs and I hope the Gund JJ toy brings more awareness to this most mis-represented breed.

I'm so weary of the BSL BS. I've had Dobes for many yrs -- 30+ -- so have been dealing with it for most of my life but in my lifetime, at least, I don't think it was ever as bad for Dobes as it has been for pits.

    1. I think there are just so many more dogs considered to be pits, which really saturates the public eye. I agree, it doesn't seem as though Dobermans ever had it as bad, though they're still the go-to scary or evil movie/tv show dog.

  12. Thanks for the shout out and votes, jen! I am glad that the winner was not only rehabbed dog but also a pittie
