Conklin NY Dobermans: and then there were 3

There are still 3 Dobermans left at the Broome County Humane Society, waiting for homes!

My handsome Houston went home not long after my last post on the Conklin dogs. You can also check out the Broome County Humane Society Facebook page to see some pictures of the lovely Sasha in her wonderful new home! You can also scroll down and see a picture of Emma (formerly Eclipse) that her forever home shared, and a picture of Storm the day he was rescued. He just breaks my heart.

Storm, Dusty, and Nani wait for somebody to need just the right Doberman in their lives.

Dusty is in a foster home, which is wonderful! His foster folks will be able to see him as he really is, and get to know his quirks and preferences. You can call them to set up a meeting, and see if Dusty is the right boy for you!

Nani and Storm worry me a bit, I confess. At the Humane Society, they have adequate shelter and food, but a Doberman is not built to be a kennel dog. Dobermans are people and family dogs, and crave that level of contact. Elka whines interminably when I go to the bathroom (if I let her); how must this pair feel? They're both described as shy, and I wonder if some of that is the shelter life, combined with their change in situation; both are seniors, and must be just the tiniest bit confused about what's going on.

I love this picture of Storm; whoever snapped it got lucky. He has a big ol' smile on his face, and what is going on with that flyaway ear? I'm sure he could be a lot of fun, given the correct Doberman-savvy owner. I also wonder if some of Storm's shyness might come from affectation of his albinism. Perhaps he can't see very well, and is startled by people approaching his kennel? This is all armchair diagnosis, mind you; pay no attention to the blogger behind the curtain.

Nani is described as a shy and gentle girl, good with cats and other dogs. This is significant, and truly in her favor! Depending on drive, not all Dobermans are good with cats. Her picture also captures a lovely grin!

There are many benefits to adopting an adult dog; you're out of the puppy "chew everything jump on everybody ohmyGodwhatisthat?!" stage. They are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. They may or may not be house trained (each of their pages says "unknown", though I'm sure if he wasn't before, Dusty sure is now). This is a good way to get a purebred Doberman without having to shell out for breeder prices, and at 4, Dusty still has a chance of being a good partner in any number of dog activities. Heck, the "seniors" might well be champions at nosework. You never know 'til you try!

A lot of people, when rescuing, worry about whether they'll form a proper bond with their rescue dog. I don't have personal experience in having rescued a dog, but I'll tell you that I've read story after story written by people who adopted adult and older dogs. In most of these cases, the dogs took to their new lives and families pretty quickly, as though they knew that they had been rescued and given a new lease on life. The joy of such a thing is incomparable, I'm sure. I love reading those stories.

Additionally, even if you're unsure about adopting one of these dogs, there's a chance that you could foster Nani or Storm. The Broome County Humane Society web page has a "ways you can help" section, and the number to call regarding fostering is 607-724-3709. You can also always stop by in person! So please, if you know somebody looking for a dog, somebody looking for a Doberman, or somebody looking for a way to help and they're in central New York, tell them about Dusty, Storm, and Nani.

The Dobermans thank you!

  3. I prefer adopting older dogs - it's just kinder to the dog. I work all day - it isn't fair to a puppy to be alone for that long. Older dogs don't need that level of supervision. Blueberry bonded to me almost immediately. The long car ride home was all she needed to claim me as her own.

I really hope someone else in the New York area will feel the same. Thanks for keeping us updated on these dogs!

    1. I think that a lot of people prefer to adopt older dogs! Not everybody has the energy/desire/werewithal to deal with a puppy and everything one entails.

I'm glad that there are only 3 left, but I'm also sad that they're still in the shelter.

  5. Almost all of our dogs, save Kuster, have been adults when we got them, and we had a fantastic bond with each of them! I hope the right people come along for all three of them!

  8. So nice to see that so many have already found homes. Dusty is gorgeous, so are Storm and Nani. I have found Dobermans to be the most wonderful family dogs. I know that I have loved every one of the ones I have met. My cousin's Dobermans were so wonderful.

I am glad you are featuring these pups on your blog. I hope Nani and Storm get out soon.

As someone who has adopted an older dog (twice), I totally agree with you. They truly are some of the best dogs. I wish people knew that so more could get homes.

    1. I figure even if I can't take one, I can certainly try to help in this manner. Elka has been such a wonderful addition to my life, and I want these dogs to have a chance at a family life, and a family to have a chance at knowing how great these dogs can be.

  10. Hi everyone! Sasha's new mommy here, just wanted to drop by and let you all know how she's doing! Sasha has adjusted to "home life" very well, she and her "mini me" Min Pin sister Tink love eachother as though they grew up together. Ms Sasha loves to go hiking and swimming at our lake, and she is a great jogging partner! Sasha is up to 60lbs and her coat has filled in quite nicely, her vet is very pleased with her progress. Dispite her dialed-cardiomyopathy and cellulitis, you would think she is a big ole puppy! She gets so excited at times that the play just comes out and you would swear she thinks she's a horse by the way she prances and gallops through the house. She has been such a blessing, we can't even remember what life was like before her!

We stopped at the humane society on Friday and were very excited to learn that Nani had gone home the day before!! Sadly Storm is still there :( but on the bright side he gets plenty of love and attention from the staff as he is "their favorite" BUT that handsome boy needs a home and family to call his own!! I hope it comes very soon.

Thank you for all the lovely advise and all the good that you do! I truly look forward to every new post!!
(((huggs))) and *licks* from Sasha and her family!

    1. YAY! I'm so glad that you've come by to update us on Sasha!

I didn't realize that she had DCM, poor girl :( I'm glad that it doesn't seem to slow her down! We sometimes call Elka "horse" for much the same reason.

I'm so glad to hear that Nani went home! I didn't check the BC Humane page after my post, until just now. Just Storm is listed, not Dusty anymore either! Storm does need a home, and I'm confident that it's out there for him!

Thanks again for telling us about Sasha, I'm so happy that she was right for you and your family!

    2. Nani is now our Ruthie and after her warm turkey lunch today she is sleeping next to our bed on a heap of blankets. She is safe and so loved.

    3. Ruthie! What a lovely name for her. I'm so glad that you stopped by to tell me about her, and that she found lovely people to give her a home!

  11. Thank you. We named her Ruthie after the bibical Ruth.. both were poor and in sad situations and now found forever love and comfort. Sometime ago we raised and showed Saints and Mastiffs but they are long gone now.. we were then blessed with a Dobie who someone had to give up after 8 yrs. Rio was a delight to have but now he is gone. We belong to a rescue and have fostered and adopted many small breed dogs which six are still with us, but we needed a big dog to love. And there she was. We also have two small cats one which does not have use of his back legs and Ruthie just follows the cats around. She is very quiet but finds those little short legged cats very interesting. Especially when they lie near her. The other dogs are fine with her and Ruthie seems to enjoy hanging around with Bunny our 3 lbs poodle. Some say Ruthie is blessed to have us, but we feel we are the ones who were blessed.

    1. I wondered if she was named after the Biblical Ruth, actually. Great choice, I feel! I'm sorry to hear about your dearly departed...you sound like you've given them wonderful lives.

Ruthie following the cats around sounds funny! I can just imagine her doing so, with that Doberman look of interest, confusion, and consternation all at once. I'm really glad that she's just fitting right in!

They really do shine a light in our lives, don't they?
