Tast Tuesday March 27 2012

A couple of weeks ago, I had a Not So Tasty Tuesday, to make sure people who read and followed me knew about the chicken jerky dangers. As I mentioned, Chicken Jerky always seemed like a good, safe way to go. After all, the ingredients were simple: chicken. It was those pesky environmental hazards that seemed to get the best of a good thing.

So, what to use as a treat instead? If you're like me, you haven't made your own jerky  yet. You probably also have a dog that you like throwing a treat to once in awhile, if not having actual training sessions in which treats are currency.

Enter Pure Bites, which I found while looking for something to add in my Mr. Chewy order so that I got free shipping.

I saw the Pure Bites on the list and hesitated, thinking "You won't get me that easily!" So, I Googled them. And came up with the same information that was listed on the Mr. Chewy site.

Ingredients? Beef liver.

Country of origin (and again, I was fooled by this one before too. Waggin' Train says USA on it as well)? USA.

I'm not sure why it's printed in French, as well. Maybe they have brisk Canadian sales? Regardless, I figured I'd give them a shot, because they were cheaper than shipping, and I couldn't find any warnings about them, so these claims might be truthful.

They're not all that smelly, which is nice. Smelly dog treats are not a pleasure for me to work with; Elka, I think, doesn't mind. She is a dog, after all.  Being freeze-dried liver, though, the treats do not last long once in Elka's maw. So, in absence of an action shot, I went with the product spot. Who knows, maybe we'll get a sponsorship?

(this review was not paid for by Mr. Chewy or by PureBites. I did it all by  my onesey.)

  1. The German: "Looks yummy, Elka! My people have been worried about treat safety these days...so I look really sad face sad face when they eat Greek yogurt - and BINGO - they spoon out a little for me...though it's probably too messy to carry as "reward" bits? Enjoy your snack!"

    1. I'm sorry, I'm not sure how to make Greek yogurt portable. I agree that it is super tasty, though! Elka loves when we share it.

  2. I had to get some of the Pure Bites as well (the cheddar cheese and the beef liver), and my dogs thought they were awesome! And, it is super hard to find a good, one-ingredient treat. Plus, I actually prefer these for training, since they are so much easier to break into smaller pieces.

    1. Yes, the breakability of the treats is a big bonus. Sometimes you get treats, and they're HUGE. They take too long to eat to be effective training treats, and attention goes all over the place.

  3. We tried some freeze dried chicken treats for a review a while back and it was like crack! The girls stalked me! I even took it with me to the nursing home to test it with other dogs and see if they liked it. All the dogs in the nursing home stalked me for that stuff! I haven't tried that brand, but I'll have to look for it.

    1. Hah, I'm imagining your "pack" stalking you, heads down, those long greyhound legs and that GSD sharkface!

Elka definitely likes them a lot! They'll be a repeat buy.

  4. My dogs would do anything for liver. Anything. And they are not fooled by liver flavored chemicals. I've been trying to find something like this and it seems to fit the bill. Thanks on their behalf.

    1. They're very welcome! I was really happy to find these as well.

I'm not sure what the deal is with companies and they're chemicals. It just freaks me out after awhile.

  5. I've been meaning to try these! Have you heard of Pawmetto treats? They're made with 100% liver and I love them
